Erik the Red, also known as Erik Thorvaldsson, was a Viking explorer and trader who is best known for founding the first Norse settlement in Greenland in 985 AD. He was born in Norway, but his family was exiled to Iceland due to his father's involvement in a feud. Erik is said to have continued his father's violent ways, and was eventually exiled from Iceland himself for three years after killing a neighbor.
During his exile, Erik sailed west and discovered a large, inhospitable land, which he named Greenland to encourage others to join him there. Upon his return to Iceland, Erik convinced many people to emigrate to Greenland. He later returned to Iceland and became involved in a feud that resulted in his death by an ax in 1003.
Despite his troubled past, Erik the Red is remembered as a key figure in Viking history for his exploration and settlement of Greenland, which he made a hub for trade with Europe and North America. Today, his legacy lives on through his descendants and the modern-day nation of Greenland.
